In this exercise for Typography the assignment was to combine 2 typographic characters. One character black (positive) and one white (negative) while keeping both characters legible. Only one font was used (but different weights of that font could be used) and 2 letters/characters. The letters chose were G/g and B/b.
The font chosen for this assignment is Clarendon. This font is a Slab Serif style font. This font was created in 1845 by Robert Besley. It was created as a metal typeface for a foundry in England.
There was a lot of process work to get to these final designs. Some of these final designs were the first ones I created and just really liked them. Others took a while to get to ones I liked. I wanted the letters to be decently readable while also making an interesting use of negative space. That is why I like the first one a lot. You can tell it is a G and a B but it is also not too obvious and that makes it interesting to look at. In my process work you can see that I played around with weight and size a lot in some of the iterations that are similar. There are also some where I made up a completely new concept.
